2026 Formula 1 regulations: what changes and why it matters
The 2026 regulations are the biggest technical shake-up in F1 since the 2014 hybrid era. Engines, aerodynamics, tyres and even the way drivers overtake are all changing. Here is the rundown you need to follow the season.
Engines: 50% electric power
The new power units are still V6 turbos, but electrical power triples: from ~120 kW to 350 kW. In practice, half the total output comes from the electric motor (MGU-K) and half from the combustion engine.
The MGU-H (which recovered energy from the turbo) is gone. The new rules aim for simpler, cheaper engines, opening the door to new manufacturers.

Every car runs on synthetic E-fuel, produced from captured carbon and renewable energy. Chemically similar to petrol, but with a net-zero carbon footprint.
Active aerodynamics
For the first time, cars have movable front and rear wings, not just the rear like with DRS. On straights the wings open to cut drag; in corners they close to maximise downforce.
Override: the new DRS
The classic DRS is gone. In its place comes the electric override: a driver within one second of the car ahead can request an extra electrical power boost to attempt a pass. The aim is to make overtaking depend on skill and energy management, not just opening a flap.
Lighter, smaller cars
| Aspect | 2025 | 2026 |
|---|---|---|
| Minimum weight | 798 kg | 768 kg |
| Width | 2000 mm | 1900 mm |
| Wheelbase | 3600 mm | 3400 mm |
Shorter, narrower and lighter: better agility and lower fuel use.
New manufacturers on the grid
The new rules have attracted Audi (buying Sauber), Ford (with Red Bull Powertrains), Honda (with Aston Martin) and General Motors / Cadillac. The 2026 grid is the most diverse in decades.
FAQ
Is DRS gone for good? Yes. The electric override replaces it.
Why drop the MGU-H? To simplify and lower the cost of engines, making it easier for new manufacturers to join.
Can E-fuel be used in road cars? Yes, that is one of the goals: technology transferable to the street.
When do the new rules start? The 2026 season is already racing under these regulations.
