The 2026 World Cup awards 48 places split across FIFA's six confederations. For the first time most continents add slots compared to the old 32-team format.

The three hosts (US, Mexico and Canada) take their places automatically within CONCACAF's 6.

Based on FIFA ranking and recent form:
- South America: Argentina (defending champion), Brazil
- Europe: France, Spain, England, Germany, Portugal, Netherlands
- CONCACAF: none in the top 10, but watch the US and Mexico as hosts
- Africa: Morocco (Qatar 2022 semi-finalist)
- Asia: Japan, South Korea
The intercontinental play-off
The remaining 2 slots are decided in an intercontinental mini-tournament played at US, Mexican and Canadian venues days before the World Cup. Six teams compete (CAF, AFC, CONMEBOL, CONCACAF and OFC), with seeding by FIFA ranking.
First-time qualifiers
With 48 slots, several teams may make their World Cup debut. FIFA expects between 4 and 6 historic debutants, mostly from Asia, Africa and Oceania.
